Thinking about Sara Jeannette Duncan and the Honorable Sir Rash Behary Ghose.
Just what was "The Law of Mortgages in British India" all about?
And, does anyone have a copy of Sara Jeannette Duncan's books on Calcutta? Oh, and by the way, if you want to know where to listen to a Finnish female jazz saxophonist in Paris, I can tell you!
I hadn't heard of either of these writers, but my Calcutta education is somewhat lacking -- I did find a bit on Behary which has been forwarded to you under separate cover -- shades of the romance of old India -- at least romantic for the British I suppose -- still a lot of echoes of their presence in the early 1980's and even less remaining by the mid-80's -- probably almost nothing left there today -- the remains of the day, to be sure.
